Interview with Nicola Cora

Q: What is your current role at Bata and what are your responsibilities?

A: At the beginning on 2021 I was promoted to Digital Transformation Manager. I am responsible for global IT and digital projects execution for the Bata group, advancing thecompany’s digital capabilities on all channels and touchpoints, as well as developing and maintaining an enterprise omnichannel platform that will make Bata stand out online.

Q: What other roles have you worked in and how long have you worked at Bata?

A: I started working for Bata in January 2018, after gaining seven years’ e-commerce experience in AW LAB, another company of the group. I was hired as a Project Manager focused on Bata’s EU digital transformation, reporting to the Chief Digital Officer. I was in this role for three years, facilitating and coordinating our team’s effort to deliver new technologies – including the e-commerce platform, developing omnichannel capabilities and a consumer/instore app in all EU countries.

Q: What are the essential skills for driving the digital transformation?

A: Over the past few years, I have definitely come to appreciate the importance of communication. With many different teams and individuals working on a big project – like digital transformation – it is essential that everyone is aware of what the others are doing, how we’re progressing and what the priorities are. There are a lot of moving parts to keep track of, so making sure you’re organized is another essential. Clear team and department goals and deadlines have provided an organizational framework, but there’s still a lot to do day-to-day to keep everything and everyone moving in the right direction.

The technical aspects of the work require careful attention to detail, as well as an understanding of how the technology works and what can break it. Inevitably, we face setbacks; being able to manage those and solve problems effectively is probably the most important skill I’ve developed since joining Bata.

Q: How would you describe the culture at Bata?

A: The culture at Bata is a great mix of tradition and innovation. Our side of the business is relatively new (when you consider the company has been around since 1894), but everyone recognizes the need to constantly improve and innovate. You can see that kind of ambition in how the styles of shoes have evolved, and the business itself. That type of culture and mindset is what has made Bata a successful worldwide operation, and our team gets to drive the latest expansion – into the digital world – making sure Bata gains the same foothold online as it does on the ground.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Bata and would you recommend Bata as an employer?

A: Collaboration and communication are essential parts of my job. Having trustworthy and smart colleagues has really set me up for success in these areas. Being part of these teams, solving problems together and celebrating breakthroughs has been the most rewarding part of my job – and I’m excited about more breakthroughs and success ahead.
