  • Leadership is part of our DNA at Bata. Our founder, Tomas Bata, believed that in order to do a job well we must lead by example. We expect our managers to show this quality: gaining the trust of their colleagues by communicating clearly and acting decisively in challenging situations. The Bata management team is responsible for bringing out the best in their staff, understanding individuals’ strengths to progress their careers and Bata’s success.

  • Our marketers work tirelessly to understand the needs of our customers. Researching the latest global footwear trends since 1894, they know how to sell shoes to a global market, whether it’s in Delhi, Mexico City or Geneva. Successful marketers share a sense of curiosity, a thirst for learning and a sharp analytical mind. Our teams anticipate the changes in the world of fashion, footwear and communication, creating strategies and campaigns that will give Bata a competitive edge.

  • Running a successful global brand requires careful planning. To reach our markets around the world, Bata has built a strategic logistics and distribution network, ensuring that every customer gets the shoes they want when they want them, no matter where they are. How we get raw materials to factories and then the end product to the customer is a constantly shifting process; our supply chain personnel work tirelessly to understand the market demand and make the path to the consumer as smooth as possible. Our team is made up of clear thinkers who understand the power of a robust process and can anticipate challenges ahead.

  • Technology has become central to everything we do at Bata. From the factory floor to our retail stores and to the boardroom, we rely on effective systems and connectivity to keep our business moving forward. Our IT professionals make this progress possible by finding practical fixes for everyday issues and innovative solutions to address tomorrow’s challenges. We seek out IT staff that go above and beyond and find not only the solution, but the best solution – personalities that are constantly looking for better ways to do their job and to make the business more efficient.

  • A few things have changed since we started doing business in 1894. How people shop in the 21st century is a major shift. Mastering E-commerce and being competitive online is essential to our business. Our team mixes technology and marketing know-how to make sure our customers can find the shoes the need, while helping Bata reach new customers and markets. A deep knowledge of online platforms, algorithms, product optimization and shifting digital trends is what we look for in our E-commerce wizards.

  • As a family business, we want our employees to be treated like family. Monitoring job satisfaction, protecting employee interests, handling contracts and responding to everyday requests is what’s required to keep our family happy and motivated. Our empathetic HR teams work proactively to improve the working conditions and the lives of their colleagues all over the world. Understanding people is a must in this position, but so is a patient and critical eye when dealing with paperwork.

  • Our global operation relies on a flexible and agile financial system. Accurate reporting, accounting, forecasting and management helps to maintain the financial and operational health of Bata worldwide. Our team of financial professionals spend their days gathering and analyzing information to inform and devise strategies that will drive Bata’s business forward. A passion for numbers and business, and the ability to see an opportunity, is what sets our financial team apart.

Interview with Gary Yee

Hi, everyone. I am Gary Yee. I am the Senior Operations Manager in Bata’s China for west services limited which is based in China.

I have been building a career in Bata. The opportunity to work in this organization gave me a perspective in different areas. I’ve been in the product development department, and I’ve done marketing as well. Actually, now, I’m in the supply chain. This allows me to gain in-depth experience and understanding of our company, Bata. How the organization works, what stands for and what exactly do you need in order to succeed.

Before Bata I started with gaining extensive experience in merchandising and brand development and all in all my experience in work is basically in the footwear industry. From the day I started working, this is where I’ve been. There’s a saying that unless you’ve put a foot into the footwear industry, you will never pull the foot out because that’s where you will stay and belong.

My first role introduced me, obviously, to Bata foot product, the footwear development where I was responsible for taking ideas, getting inspirations, and bringing them to life. Basically, products form on paper that eventually becomes a physical shoe that you can touch and feel and wear. From conception I learn things, and also from production, manufacturing, then finally from the store. It’s such an important foundation in the career that I’ve built in Bata. That’s what our company is all about. I mean, Bata is all about footwear. It’s a shoe company, it sells shoes for the people. And this has set me up for success. The opportunity put me in a good position with my knowledge to work in the other parts of business in Bata. I had a stint as a marketing manager and then I was assigned as a commercial manager. I’m handling basically the processes of work, technically selling shoes in a way toward the Bata outpost. And before finally I was assigned, I am currently still assigned to the supply chain department.

And I believe enthusiasm and passion – some of them you need to succeed in any career actually, in fact, but here, in what I’m doing I have full passion. Every day is something new and it’s exciting to actually go to work, come to work because it’s something I enjoy doing. Processes is something that you learn along the way as well as you build and gain knowledge, and this is actually what has made it possible for me and propelled me to where I am today – as a Senior Operations Manager in the supply chain department.

More specifically, I think it’s a combination of my personality traits. I am loyal, as I have been with the company for more than 17 or close to 18 years. I’m committed to the job that I’ve been assigned to and whatever I’ve been assigned to do. And obviously I work hard. I mean there are things that I don’t know and will have to learn. I will learn and whatever that’s necessary to be done, it will be done. And skills I’ve developed – tearing especially when we are doing a product development, attention to details – are very important and ability to recognize what’s going to be in trend, what’s going to be in the market.

Part of the things that you have to learn and opportunities you have to be able to find – the right opportunities. And obviously now in supply chain we have to optimize all the possibilities into the processes that we are doing. On logistics, we have to be able to level the shoes, and obviously you have to love shoes. I mean, in the end, it’s a product which everyone has to use. And I do love shoes. I have many pairs of shoes at home. So, Bata’s nurturing environment played a big part I would say.

17 years with the company it’s not a short time, it’s not exactly very long but it’s long enough and it’s becoming actually rarer and rarer for people to stay in organization for periods of time that is more than 10 years. But Bata, as I see and I believe, truly values their employees. Employee is one of the key assets as I understand. And with the opportunity that I had to meet senior Bata T.J., that opens me up in the sense that I can see and I can feel how he values employees who work in the organization. I’m also proud because working for this company – it invests, say, it believes in investments in its employee training, education.

And not just that. It’s also in the communities. I mean we have responsibility that we believe we should be part of our company culture in countries where we operate in the marketplace where we are, and this is done through different kinds of initiatives like, for example, the Bata children programme and some community service programme that’s being held and done in different localities.

In other words, I would say Bata is a special place to work. This is, honestly, this is my third job into my working career which spans close to 28 years but I’ve been here the longest, close to 18 years. And I believe I will be here and I hope I retire in the company group. And if you have the passion, you have the commitment, Bata will want us for that. With ethic, that is something that we stand tall as well, but you have to keep an open mind, opportunities will be more if you have an open mind, and you should also have a desire to give back. In the end, it goes both ways. And if that sounds like who you are, then in Bata you will rest assured you can go very far.

Thank you very much and I wish anyone or everyone the best of life.
